What is Xtandi?
- Xtandi is an androgen receptor inhibitor used to treat certain prostate cancers. It works by preventing the actions of androgens (male hormones) to help control cancer growth and decrease tumor size.
- Xtandi is prescribe when prostate cancer no longer responds to hormone therapy or surgical treatment. It is also used when prostate cancer has spread to other parts of the body and responds to hormone therapy or surgery to lower testosterone. Additionally, Xtandi is use in patients whose cancer has not spread but are at high risk of metastasis.
- Xtandi was approved by the FDA on August 31, 2012.
Product introduction
- Xtandi 40mg Soft Capsule is used in the treatment of cancer of the prostate gland. It may be also used to treat other conditions, as determined by the doctor. It works by blocking the effects of male hormones such as testosterone.
- Xtandi 40mg Soft Capsule should be taken with or without food, preferably at a fixed time every day.
- Your doctor will decide what dose is necessary and how often you need to take it. This will depend on what you are being treated for and may change from time to time.
- You should take it exactly as your doctor has advised. Taking it in the wrong way or taking too much can cause very serious side effects.
- It may take several weeks or months for you to see or feel the benefits but do not stop taking it unless your doctor tells you to.
- Headache, hot flashes, weakness and high blood pressure is very common side effect of this medicine. Other than this, fractures, falls, dry skin, pruritus, decrease appetite, and constipation might observ as side effects.
- Regular blood tests are require checking your blood cells along with liver function during treatment with this medicine. It makes your skin more sensitive towards sunlight, hence take extra caution while going out.
Warnings
- Although not for use by women, Xtandi can cause birth defects if either parent is taking this medicine.
- Use a condom and one other form of birth control to prevent pregnancy during treatment and for at least 3 months after treatment ends.
- Xtandi may cause side effects affecting your spinal cord. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe lower back pain, difficulty walking, or sudden loss of bladder or bowel control.
Before Taking This Medicine
You should not use Xtandi if you are allergic to enzalutamide.
Inform your doctor if you have a history of:
- Seizures
- Head injuries, strokes, or brain tumors
- Heart disease or circulation problems
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- High cholesterol or triglycerides
Xtandi is not for use in women. It may cause birth defects if either parent is treat with this medicine. Use birth control and notify your doctor immediately if pregnancy occurs during treatment.
How to Take Xtandi
- Take Xtandi exactly as prescribed. You may take Xtandi with or without food, at the same time each day.
- Dosage usually involves taking two 80 mg tablets or four 40 mg tablets daily. Swallow the tablets or capsules whole without breaking, chewing, or crushing them.
- Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
Dosing Information
- The usual adult dose for prostate cancer is 160 mg daily.
- For patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) or metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer, Xtandi is take alongside a GnRH analog or following a bilateral orchiectomy.
- For patients with non-metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer, Xtandi 40 mg can use with or without a GnRH analog.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is close to your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
In the event of an overdose, seek emergency medical help. An overdose could result in a seizure.
What to Avoid
Enzalutamide can increase the risk of seizures. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how Xtandi affects you.
Avoid activities that could increase the risk of falls or injuries, Xtandi 40 mg as Xtandi may cause dizziness or increase the risk of fractures.
Xtandi Side Effects
Seek emergency medical help if you have an allergic reaction, experience dizziness, seizures, confusion, severe headaches, weakness, chest pain, or signs of infection.
Common side effects may include:
- Fatigue
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Back or joint pain
- Flushing
- High blood pressure

Drug Interactions
